Does Paxil have an adverse effect on birth control? I recently started birth control and was wondering if my Paxil will have any effects on it. I received my birth control from the Health Department and they didn't ask any questions really, they took my financial information and handed me a 3 month supply. Help would be great.

S P replied: "It shouldn't. I was on both at the same time for years and it did nothing to me."

anyone out there ever have and adverse side effects after stoping the drug paxil? I have read what it can cause just wondering what some others have experienced personally.

rositha520 replied: "When I was on paxil I was always nerved up & ready to hurt someone now that i'm off of it I'm fne."

sunshineathome74 replied: "Depends on what you are taking it for. If you are talking strictly physical medical effects...check web md. I know when I am off a dose, I get the zaps. Work with your doctor to minimize the side effects. You need to slowly come off it. Good luck!"

Has anyone experienced adverse side effects on Effexor? I've been putting off taking it for my anxiety disorder because I had some bad side effects years ago while taking Paxil.

Sine kwa non replied: "I have been taking Effexor (375 mg. per day) for over three years. Constipation is the only side effect I have noticed. I also take Seroquel (75 mg. per day) which is an anti-psychotic and helps with insomnia. It's only side effect is residual drowsiness in the morning. Side effects may vary for different individuals, but both these medications appear to be fairly safe."

M. replied: "I started Effexor and had mixed results at first. The first few days I was in a hospital setting. The low stress environment made any ups and downs I experienced manageable. Once I was out, though, I was easily upset and angered, and even had one bout where I was screaming at someone, which is something I have never done. It was odd, because I could see my moods go up and down like waves in the ocean, and about as quickly. After about three weeks, and a dosage increase to 112.5 milligrams of Effexor XR, my mood stabilized and I was seeing some positive results. I felt good for the first time in months. I now am on 225 milligrams. I can say now that this is most effective antidepressant I've been on, but I would absolutely not suggest it for a first line offense against depression and anxiety. The side effects have been tolerable, but there are a few things I noticed. I have had sensory issues my entire life being as I have autism. Since I've been on Effexor, these sensory issues have become amplified, and it takes a lot of emotional effort to handle particular types of touch. This has in turn lead to my aversion to sex becoming more of an issue. Another thing I've noticed have been shaking. Most of the time I now have the shakes. Also, for the first few weeks, I found it very difficult to eat. I can honestly say that I was in a bad enough situation that this was the last step before ECT. I have tried almost every SSRI, and every mood stabilizer. I would say that this drug should be the equivalent to a defibrillator. Getting off of it is very, very difficult. My suggestion would be to stay at 75 milligrams for a month to see if it will have any positive effects (even slight ones), because in rare cases, Effexor will have a permanent withdrawal, and you will need to be on an SSRI for the rest of your life."

if you take a prescription medicine and it really isn't needed, will it have adverse effects? if you took a prescription medication such as paxil or other antidepressant over a period of time, and you really didn't need it, would it alter anything...all answers appreciated i do need this medicine, i was only curious as to what would happen if someone took it and didn't need it..i have been very depressed for quite sometime also very stressed ,have alot of heath issues, sorry i gave you the impression i was taking it and didn't need it. they have really helpd me alot. thanks for the answer

krys replied: "of course it will. meds are given for a reason. especially antidepressants. the chemicals released from the pills are to make up for chemicals that your body produces naturally. in cases where a dr. gives you these meds it is b/c your body is no producing them properly. so the pills are doing what your body is already doing. the question you should ask yourself is why are you taking pills you do not need."

2 weeks of paxil - No effect. Should i switch meds? I had a feeling that my depression is linked to dopamine, but my doc prescribed paxil. I've been taking it for 2 weeks to eliminate serotonin deficiency version, and have absolutely no positive effects what so ever. Should i wait longer, or go for Wellbutrin? p.s. There was adverse effects in the beginning, and i kind a liked when i was all wired up, because i feel i need a stimulation (i feel apathy, laziness, and low motivation) But now their all gone, and i feel 100 % the same like when i was without paxil.

Bottom Contributor replied: "You should be discussing this with your doctor. Normally, to see the real effects of Paxil it can take 3 weeks to 2 months, so I don't think quitting now and switching to another drug would be wise. And by the way. It's fine to "feel" that your problem is linked to dopamine, but that's not a medical reason to switch your meds."

Very simple question, but very important for me (paxil users)? I started using rexetin (same as paxil) a week ago, first two days - 10 mg, then 20 mg a day every morning. At the beginning i was experiencing adverse effects like hypertension, flu-like symptoms, insomnia, but now i don't feel them anymore. As well as i don't feel ANY KIND of positive effects. NONE. Is it still going to work for me? And how will i feel when it will kick in? Just wake up one day eat a pill, and feel unusual effects from it? Or is it going to start gradually?

kirktotallyrocks replied: "Your doctor has probably already warned you that it takes a couple of weeks to start feeling the positive effects of any anti-depressant. Unfortunately, the side effects do start right away. The good news is that the side effects don't last very long (it sounds like you're already getting over them). But yes, the positive is still on its way. It won't happen overnight really. Actually, for me, I just realized one day that I hadn't been feeling so miserable for a few days - it was that subtle! Then I actually started getting happier over the next few days. Those I have talked to that didn't get much benefit from their anti-depressant still got SOME benefit, so it's next to impossible that you won't be feeling at least a little bit better soon. But Paxil wouldn't be so widely used if it wasn't highly effective, so take heart in that. Different people take different amounts of time. Hang in there, it's TOTALLY worth it."

How does marijuana affect metabolism? I use supplements(hydroxycut, creatine, amino's, and whey protein), and I work out sometimes as much as twice a day, six or seven days a week, but I also smoke marijuana regularly (2-3 times a day) to aide with my clinically-diagnosed depression (beats the hell out of Wellbutrin, Paxil, etc.,). Could my toking be having an adverse effect on my exercising? Please don't chastise, thats what parents and clergy are for. Thx!!

cutie pie replied: "after getting high you get hungry and then eat a lot so it might make you fatter."

has no name replied: "i doubt it...i exercise just about everyday and eat very healthy and yet smoke as well. You may of course get the munchies..haha...I was overweight years and years ago and I went on a diet and started exercising and continued to smoke and its all good, and if it helps with your depression all the better although I would get that addressed."

hisgirl replied: "Well when you get high do you munch? I was told if you repressed the urge to chow down then you would actually burn more calories. That is why when I get stoned I keep bottled water on hand. It suppresses the urge. I don't think it has much bearing on working out. I have worked out stoned. I seemed to focus more but wasn't as intense."

TD J replied: "Ok. hydroxycut is to lose weight, creatine amino's and whey is to gain weight or muscle. Marijuana increases your cravings. You need to cut out the supplements if ur going to continue to smoke. If you don't your going to become another 600lbs man."

moonbaby279 replied: "Marijuana lowers blood sugar. So I think it slows down metabolism."

Does anybody know about ZOLOFT? Does anybody know of any adverse effects on an unborn baby in the first trimester if you are taking ZOLOFT? I have recently heard about a law suit againts the makers of PAXIL and women who had babies born with problems from taking PAXIL while pregnant. Just curious if anybody has any information. Thanks for the info.

Lesley M replied: "I don't think you should take it, pregnant or not. From what I can tell from when my daughter was on it, it cures depression by causing cravings that lead to emotional eating, a temporary fix, until you get fat and your self esteem plummets. Bad, nasty stuff! Try B complex vitamins, fish oil (check with doctor!!!) and sunshine instead!"

mytwodogs60463 replied: "call and ask your doctor or ask your pharmacist about it."

Nurse Kerr replied: "Manufacturer information in the PDR (Physician's Drug Reference) lists it as category C* (See below) and states "Zoloft should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus." It is not known how Zoloft affects other symptoms of pregnancy. Tricyclic antidepressants have been associated with, but not known to cause, central nervous system effects, limb deformities, or developmental delay in infants. Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the fetus...and there are no controlled studies in women, or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should only be given if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Same goes for Paxil"

AshReneeM replied: "Actually I'm pregnant and my doctor just prescribed me Zoloft. I was given Zoloft because my hubby is deploying, started working somewhere new, I cry at work for no apparent reason, and many other things. (I know it's all from being prego), but I'm in the military also, and they can't have me crying at work all the time. Anyways, I was told that there are few antidepressants that you can take while pregnant, but Zoloft was the best for me. Talk to you doctor and DON'T be afaid to ask questions about it."

*/sunset\* replied: "I don't know about zoloft but I'mon prozac and I hear thats the best to be on when pregnant, but it can still have an affect that makes a baby too relaxed that it may cause problems, but I heard of people having healthy babies while on prozac... I don't know about zoloft"

Coffee calms me down, is this a sign of ADHD/ADD? Please read this! I have been drinking coffee since early childhood (Now i'm 19). It always calmed me down, and looks like i have been self medicating without realizing it. I have BIG problems concentrating, i can't sit still while being in class (i'm a student) and i can't plan things/organize stuff. It has made me really depressed lately, so i went to see a psychiatrist. He prescribed rexetin (similar to paxil). I know that it is an SSRI, and is not a solution to my problem. I have been taking it for 9 days now, adverse effect wore off 2 days ago, but i don't feel any kind of positive ones. My idea is to take rexetin for 2 weeks, and if there are still no positive effects, than go to my psychiatrist to ask him about wellbutrin (since it is an Dopamine reuptake inhibitor, like ritalin, it could help?) What do you think about my problem?

Leena replied: "I've heard of that. A friend of mine told me to give my son caffeine to see if he calms down and if so, that's a sign of ADHD. I've never heard of an anti depressant being prescribed for ADHD. My son was given adderall... I'm on wellbutrin. I find that it interferes with my thinking, but I am on the Maximum dose of 450mg! It's the only medication that seems to help with my depression. It also takes your appetite away!"

Bar None replied: "You sound pretty knowlegable. I think you're right on. My experience is with Ritalin. Basically you try it for a few weeks , if it works then you have ADD and you have help. If it doesn't work then you stop 'cause it's not ADD. You have to be very careful with dosage. (Your doc will know) At your age, average size and weight, for school activities and study - ask the doc about 20mg two to three times a day. As an alternative you could also try Ritalin SR (sustanied release) Concerta which is a sustained release version of the same."

Sir Studley Smugly replied: "Not true. Coffee calms a lot of people down, whether or not they have ADD. So does nicotine. The effects of any antidepressant can be subtle, and the taker may be unaware of any difference. 9 days isn't long enough to get the full effect of the drug, so stick with it for a while longer."

Coco! replied: "Yes, the caffine in coffee is a stimulent similiar to the one in the ADHD pills so yes, this is a symptom"

Need some help with this Please!!? I was told i have Social Anxiety Disorder (this was years ago i was in 6th grade now im 28) and i was placed on Paxil, about 8 years ago i went off my meds. I had read that they have adverse health effects. Most of the time i can deal but i still have some really bad bouts that i cant handle. Im concerned because lately it has gotten worse and is affecting every aspect of my life, I don't enjoy things anymore, Im extremly short with my son and im very irritable with my family and friends. Ive alson noticed that i have become a lot more angry. Help I need some advice.... Seriouse answers only please!!!! Kris No im not having any withdrawls its been far to long my concern ist that i may not be able to deal with this alone anymore and im not thrilled about getting back on meds since i have heard about serious side effects caused by these pills im intrested in therapy but i worry it may cost to much

sybil_the_soothsayer replied: "I was on Paxil for a few years and it didn't help me, it made things worse. There are many things we can do when we are feeling out of sorts, like meditation, exercise, time to yourself, a change of scenery, talking the problem out with someone you trust or a counselor, ANYTHING but taking the drugs. When we fell depressed it is a sign that something needs to be changed and medicating that feeling does not deal with the real problem. Good luck."

I love cats replied: "Well, sounds like something besides anxiety but I may be wrong. I personally have anxiety as well as bipolar disorder. Do a bipolar disorder checklist. lots of times, anxiety comes with the territory when you're bipolar. I also see a therapist once a week. I thought it was a crock but it really works wonders. I STRONGLY recommend it. I'm going to google a checklist so you can look to see if it's possible if you're bipolar. I also recommend writing down everything you're feeling, find a reputable psychiatrist and show him. I'll find that checklist now. check back. edit: Here you go. I only recommend this because you say you're irritable. yah never know. I hope you'll feel better"

Natalya replied: "Anti depressants are pretty safe to take; if your anxiety is getting bad and affecting other people, you really should speak to your doctor and consider starting medication again. Yes, these medications do have side effects, but very often these will wear off during the first three or four weeks. If not, ask your doctor to switch you to another medication. You may only need to be on the medication for a short while. Ideally, you might want to talk to a psychiatrist and ask if what you need is anti depressant medication, or rather anti-anxiety med. It's good that you recognize your anxiety is increasing, this means you can take steps now to sort it!"

angel beth replied: "Go back on your meds!!"

Kris replied: "azreil32... I am a little confused by your question. Are you worried that "bouts" that you now experience were caused by your going off Paxil 8 years ago? If so, there is only a tiny possibility that you are still experiencing side effects from going off Paxil that long ago. Are the "really bad bouts" feelings of anxiety, it sounds like that from your words. If so, these are not the result of withdrawing from Paxil 8 years ago, but it is a further development of your anxious condition that began with your SAD diagnosis when you were in 6th grade. You need to see a professional and go back on paxil or lexapro - lexapro is the current med of choice for anxiety. It greatly helped my wife and my step daughter. You also need "talk therapy;" anxiety is successfully treated by mental health counselors. ""

Smartly Retarded replied: "Dont bother yourself with this so much"

Beth replied: "You might want to try a different form of chemical lobotamy, that's what I call it. I have tried Celexa and it works pretty good. It isn't supposed to affect your sex drive as bad as the others either. Some times therapy doesn't work because it is the chemicals in our brains that are screwed up not our thought process it's self."
